Call for applications for a Postdoc research fellowship for – supporting the identification of the priority areas for marine conservation in the Azores

IMAR – Institute of Marine Research, is opening a call for one post-doctoral fellowship within the Blue Azores protocol developed by IMAR/Fundação Oceano Azul/Waitt Foundation, with the duration of 6 months starting on November 2019, or as soon as the selection process is completed.

Field of research: Marine ecology, biology, resources management or other related field. This position aims at supporting the identification of the priority areas for marine conservation in the Azores. The main objectives of this position are: (1) Bibliographic review of existing scientific information that supports the definition of conservation priorities including all relevant works on species and habitats of conservation interest for coastal, open ocean and deep-sea environments in the Azores Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ);  (2) Contribute to the identification of conservation goals and objectives and zoning criteria to design a network of new no-take Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) covering 15% of the Azores EEZ in consultation with the Regional Government of the Azores, Waitt Foundation and Bren School of Environmental Science & Management; (3) contribute to the production of a report with recommendations that meet the 15% objective of new full protection MPAs in the Azores EEZ, including the coastal, open ocean and deep-sea environments.

Admission requirements: Candidates must hold a PhD degree in biology, marine biology, or a related field. Candidates must have  (1) a broad understanding of governmental processes and of national, European and international legislation on marine conservation and protected areas; (2) experience in the creation and management of databases and ability to handle large volumes of information and to translate scientific data and findings into policy advice; (3) networking skills and the ability to cooperate and participate in discussions with a variety of stakeholders, including government decision-makers, public administrations, industry, and other NGOs. Preference will be given to candidates with a good publication record in the field of the call, an exemplary performance in oral and written communication in English, and a good knowledge of marine ecosystems in the Azores region.

Please note the latest changes introduced by the Law Decrete nº 123/2019 stipulates that Postdoctoral Fellowships can only have a maximum duration of three years and can only be assigned to persons that obtained the PhD degree less than three years ago


Workplace: The work will be developed at IMAR – Institute of Marine Research, hosted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceanography of the University of the Azores (DOP-UAc) in Horta (Faial Island), under the supervision of Dr. Telmo Morato and Dra Marina Carreiro-Silva.

Duration of the scholarship: The grant will last for 6 months, eventually renewed until, commencing preferably on  November 2019, or as soon as the selection process is completed.

Compensation: The research fellow will receive a monthly allowance of 1,509.80 €, in accordance to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) official table of fellowships (

 The fellow will be covered by a personal insurance and voluntarily contribution to the national social security system, according to the Dec.-Lei nº40/49 from 18st February.

Selection criteria: The selection of candidates will be based on curriculum evaluation, taking into account the academic record and the demonstration of the capabilities listed in the admission requirements. Interviews may be conducted to better assess the capability of candidates.

Notification of results: The final results will be presented in a list ranked by the candidates’ final scores, to be sent by e-mail to all applicants. The successful candidate will be notified via email. If the decision is unfavourable, the candidates have 10 working days to appeal. The jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship based on the adequateness of the applications.
