IMAR – Institute of Marine Research, is opening a call for a research fellowship within the research project “ATLAS A Trans-Atlantic assessment and deep-water ecosystem-based spatial management plan for Europe”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the grant agreement 678760, with the duration of 6 months starting in March 2019.
Field of research: Biodiversity and biogeography of deep-sea benthic communities in the Azores. This position aims at analysing video imagery data for the characterization of deep-sea biodiversity and biotopes in the Azores. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team to study different aspects of the biology and ecology of deep-water ecosystems in the Azores.
Admission requirements: Candidates must hold a MSc degree in biology, marine sciences, or a related field. Candidates must have experience with annotation of video images of the deep-sea, developing deep-sea biodiversity studies, and statistical analyses of the produced datasets. Additionally, candidates must have experience with the use of video annotation software (e.g. OFOP, PAPARA(ZZ)I, or others), data analyses software (R, PRIMER), knowledge of the taxonomy of deep-sea benthic biodiversity in the Azores namely Cnidaria Anthozoa, experience in participation in research cruises, record of scientific publications, and good performance in oral and written communication in English.
Work plan: The candidate will have the following specific responsibilities
- Conduct video analyses of deep-sea benthic ecosystems in the Azores;
- Conduct statistical analyses and biodiversity studies with the collected and existing information;
- Provide support with sampling, preservation, taxonomic identification and cataloguing of marine organisms collected as part of scientific project campaigns;
- Provide support with the preparation of the catalogue of cold-water corals species of the Azores;
- Provide support with the preparation of project reports and writing of scientific publications on the results obtained;
- The applicant may be requested to embark on scientific missions at sea which aim to acquire data and biological material for the project.

Workplace: The work will be developed at IMAR – Institute of Marine Research, hosted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceanography of the University of the Azores (DOP-UAc) in Horta (Faial Island), under the supervision of Dra Marina Carreiro-Silva and Dr Telmo Morato.
Duration of the scholarship: The grant will last for 6 months, eventually renewed until the end of the project, commencing preferably on the 1st March 2019.
Compensation: The research fellow will receive a monthly allowance of 980 €, in accordance to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) official table of fellowships (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The fellow will be covered by a personal insurance and voluntarily contribution to the national social security system, according to the Dec.-Lei nº40/49 from 1st February.
Selection criteria: The selection of candidates will be based on curriculum evaluation, taking into account the academic record and the demonstration of the capabilities listed in the admission requirements. Interviews may be conducted to better assess the capability of candidates.

Notification of results: The final results will be presented in a list ranked by the candidates’ final scores, to be sent by e-mail to all applicants. The successful candidate will be notified via email. If the decision is unfavourable, the candidates have 10 working days to appeal. The jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship based on the adequateness of the applications.
