A call for applications for a technical research fixed-term contract is now open

Position: Technical Researcher within the project Impactor- “Impacts of human activities in the Azores cold-water corals physiological resilience” (ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000122; from now on designated as ‘Project’), funded by the program Açores 2020 and managed by IMAR-Instituto do MAR, at the Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas da Universidade dos Açores. This call is available in both Portuguese and English.

Technical and scientific discipline: Biochemistry

Admission requirements: Candidates must hold: 1) Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biochemistry/biology or a related area 2) previous experience in biological samples collection and analysis, namely i) samples preparation for proteins analysis; ii) samples preparation for mRNA analysis; iii) spectrophotometry and electrophoreses methods; iv) high skills and independence in laboratory environment 3) fluent in Portuguese and/or English; 4) availability to start immediately.

Responsibilities: The candidate will have the following specific responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the sampling, experimental execution and routine laboratory work, planned for the Project;
  2. Organize and perform all kinds of aquarium work, planned for the Project;
  3. Collect and prepare coral tissues and skeleton samples for proteomics and transcriptomics analysis;
  4. Analysis of proteins and RNA quantification;
  5. Write project reports;
  6. Contribute in the preparation of scientific publications and oral talks

Applicable legislation: Code of the Portuguese labour, approved by the Law nº7/2009 of 12th of February with all the modifications introduced thereafter. Contract to be signed for the execution of an occasional task, following the terms defined in section g), nº2, of article 140º of the Labour Code.

Working location: The work will be developed at IMAR- Instituto do MAR, based at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, University of the Azores in Horta (Faial Island) under the scientific supervision of Inês Martins, PhD.

Contract duration: The contract will be valid for ten months, renewable until the end of the project, according to the Portuguese law. Under no circumstances will the contract be in force beyond the period required for execution of the project and may not exceed the legal limit of three years.

Compensation: The technician will be paid according to the Portuguese regulations on public service under the category of “Técnico Superior” index 15, corresponding to gross value (before taxes) of 1201€, including all other benefits described in the Portuguese legislation.

Selection criteria: The selection of candidates will be based on curriculum evaluation, taking into account the demonstration of the capabilities listed in the admission requirements. Interviews may be conducted to better assess the capability of candidates

Evaluation committee: Inês Martins, PhD (President), Marina Carreiro Silva, PhD and Cláudia Oliveira, PhD. The composition of the evaluation committee may be changed in case of eventual conflict of interests with competing candidates.

Notification of results: The final results will be presented in a list ranked by the candidates’ final scores, to be sent by e-mail to all applicants. The successful candidate will be notified via email. If the decision is unfavourable, the candidates have 10 working days to appeal. The jury may not select any of the applicants based on insufficient quality of the applications or inadequate candidate profile.
