IMAR Institute of Marine Research is opening a call for a scholarship (BI- Licenciado) within the research project “MERCES – Marine Ecosystem Restoration in Changing European Seas” , funded by the European Union´s H2020 (grant agreement No 689518), with the duration of 4 months starting in November 2019, or as soon as the selection process is completed
Field of research: Hard substrate and structured substrate is a limiting factor in deep-sea habitats, special those that migt suffer anthropogenicimpacts. Increase the surface and structuring of hard substrate available is a potential active restauration action. During the Merces programme, different substrates (artificial sponges and basalt rocks) were deployed close to hydrothermal vents and close to non vent sponge gardens. The overall objective of this project will aim at increase the knowledge of how the artificial substrates will act as potential restauration action on the deep-sea.
Admission requirements: Candidates must hold a License Degree in Environment or marine sciences. Candidates must have:
- Experience in sieving and on the taxonomy of deep-sea organism is fundamental
- Good performance in oral and written communication in English.
Preference will be given to candidates familiar with deep-sea ecosystems and Azorean organisms .T he successful candidate should be self-motivated, independent, able to work in a team, keenness on fulfilment of time tables and dead-lines and must be available on the announced start date of the fellowship.
Work plan: The candidate will have the following specific responsibilities
- Sievie the samples at different size classes (meiofauna; macrofauna; megafauna)
- Sort the samples in different taxons
- Assist in laboratory tasks, such as identifying and counting the different specimens;

Please note that the latest changes introduced by the Law Decrete nº 123/2019 stipulates that for this type of Fellowship, only candidates attending a Master Course can apply
Workplace: The work will be developed at IMAR, held in the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of Azores, under the supervision of Dr. Ana Colaço.
Duration of the scholarship: The grant will last for 4 months, eventually renewed, starting on 1st November 2019 or as soon as the selection process is completed
Compensation: The research fellow will receive a monthly allowance of 752.38€, in accordance to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) official table of fellowships. The fellow will also be covered by a personal insurance and the voluntary contribution to the national social security system, according to the Dec.-Lei nº40/49 from 1st February.
Selection criteria: The selection of candidates will be based on curriculum evaluation, taking into account the academic record and the demonstrated skills listed in the admission requirements. If necessary, interviews may be conducted.
