IMAR – Institute of Marine Research is opening a call for applications for a Fixed Term Research contract (PostDoc level) within the research project “PLASTDEEP – Assessing plastic pollution in the deep sea, the ultimate sink of plastics in the oceans” (ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000125).

Postdoc researcher within the research project “PLASTDEEP – Assessing plastic pollution in the deep sea, the ultimate sink of plastics in the oceans” (ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000125) funded by the Açores2020 operational program and managed by IMAR-Instituto do Mar, at the Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas, University of the Azores.

2-Scientific area: Marine Biology, Ecology

3-Admission requirements:

1) Hold a PhD in Biology, Marine Biology, or a closely related field
2) Knowledge on protocols for monitoring plastics in the marine environment
3) Prior knowledge on extraction techniques for microplastics in different matrices
4) Good computational skills with knowledge in programming languages such as R
5) Good track record of scientific publications

In addition, candidates should demonstrate:

6) Background knowledge on the descriptor 10 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
7) Good performance in oral and written communication in English
8) Self-motivation, independence, and ability to work in a team

In the event a foreign higher education institution awarded the doctorate degree, the degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th August until the signature of the contract

4-Position description: The candidate will work and carry out research activities within the research project “PLASTDEEP – Assessing plastic pollution in the deep sea, the ultimate sink of plastics in the oceans” (ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000125) and other ongoing projects related to marine litter in the Azores.

The candidate will have the following specific responsibilities:
-Perform an integrated analysis of monitoring data on macroplastics across different environmental compartments
-Participate in the development of distribution models of marine litter on the coastline and on the seafloor of the Azores region
-Participate in scientific cruises
-Assist with field sampling
-Support students and research assistants in data analysis and fieldwork;
-Participate in project meetings and workshops
-Assist with project management and reporting and actively contribute to writing scientific articles in this research field.

5-Applicable legislation:
Code of the Portuguese labour, approved by the Law nº7/2009 of 12th February with all the modifications introduced thereafter

6-Working Location
The work will be developed at IMAR- Instituto do MAR, based at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, University of the Azores in Horta (Faial Island) under the scientific supervision of Christopher Pham, PhD.

7-Contract duration: The contract will be valid for 11 months. Under no circumstances will the contract be in force beyond the period required for execution of the project and may not exceed the legal limit of two years

8-Compensation: The researcher will be paid under the category of “Investigador Doutorado” (index 33) corresponding to gross value of 2134.73€, including all other benefits described in the Portuguese legislation.

9-Evaluation criteria:
The selection of candidates will be based on curriculum evaluation, taking into account the academic record and the demonstration of the capabilities listed in the admission requirements. Interviews may be conducted to better assess the capability of candidates

11-Evaluation committee: Dr. Christopher Pham (President of the committee), Dr. Marina Carreiro-Silva (vogal) and Dr. Eduardo Isidro (vogal). The composition of the evaluation committee may be changed in case of eventual conflict of interests with competing candidates.

12-Notification of results: The final results will be presented in a list ranked by the candidates’ final scores, to be sent by e-mail to all applicants. The successful candidate will be notified via email If the decision is unfavourable, the candidates have 10 working days to appeal. IMAR reserves the right to cancel this process and not select any candidate, if no candidate presents the required academic training, the qualifications and/or does not meet the conditions and/or profile deemed necessary for the efficient execution of activity.
