OPEN CALL FOR A FIXED TERM RESEARCH CONTRACT

A call for applications for a technical research fixed-term contract is now open.

Position: Technical Researcher within the project PESCAz – “Pescarias Sustentáveis nos Açores: como pode ser melhorada a base científica para avaliações do estado dos recursos pesqueiros?” (referência MAR-01.03.02 -FEAMP-0039) funded by the MAR2020 operational program and managed by IMAR-Instituto do MAR, at the Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas da Universidade dos Açores.

Scientific area: Marine biology and fisheries.

Admission requirements: Candidates must hold: 1) Master’s degree in Biology, Marine Sciences or a related area; 2) previous experience in studies on marine species with commercial importance; 3) knowledge of statistical analyses and R programming language.

Added value will be considered: good communication skills (oral and written) in English and Portuguese, registration of scientific publications in the competition area, knowledge of the marine ecosystem and fisheries of the Azores, and demonstrated ability to work as a team.

Responsibilities: The candidate will have the following specific responsibilities:

  1. Review the scientific database for the main Azorean fishery resources;
  2. Prepare and collect information from fishermen and producer associations;
  3. Statistically analyze fishery dependent and independent data;
  4. Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications (working documents, reports, scientific articles, conference communications);
  5. Manage the project’s web pages and promote dissemination actions;
  6. Assist in the organization and mediation of training actions, workshops and remote events.

Applicable legislation: Code of the Portuguese labour, approved by the Law nº7/2009 of 12th of February with all the modifications introduced thereafter. Contract to be signed for the execution of an occasional task, following the terms defined in section g), nº2, of article 140º of the Labour Code.

Working location: The work will be developed at IMAR- Instituto do MAR, based at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, University of the Azores in Horta (Faial Island) under the scientific supervision of Dr. Régis Santos.

Contract duration: The contract will be valid for six months and it will eventually be renewable, starting on July 1st, 2021 or as soon as the selection process is completed. Under no circumstances will the contract be in force beyond the period required for execution of the project and may not exceed the legal limit of two years.

Compensation: The technician will be paid according to the Portuguese regulations on public service under the category of “Técnico Superior” index 15, corresponding to gross value (before taxes) of 1205.08 €, including all other benefits described in the Portuguese legislation.

Selection criteria: The selection of candidates will be based on curriculum evaluation, taking into account the demonstration of the capabilities listed in the admission requirements. Interviews may be conducted to better assess the capability of candidates.

Application submission: The call will be open from May 26th to June 9th, 2021 (10 working days). Application should be submitted by email to candidaturas@imar.org.pt with the subject “Concurso Técnico Superior PESCAz”, including a motivation letter with justification of skills for the position; detailed Curriculum Vitae, all relevant official documents (academic degree, professional degree, etc.). Applications may be submitted in either Portuguese or English. Failure to submit the requested documents will be reason for exclusion of the application.

Evaluation committee: Dr. Régis Santos (President), Dr. Mário Pinho and Dr. Hélder Silva. The composition of the evaluation committee may be changed in case of eventual conflict of interests with competing candidates.

Notification of results: The final results will be presented in a list ranked by the candidates’ final scores, to be sent by e-mail to all applicants. The successful candidate will be notified via email. If the decision is unfavourable, the candidates have 10 working days to appeal. The jury may not select any of the applicants based on insufficient quality of the applications or inadequate candidate profile.
