🌊 What lives on an underwater volcano?
Covering roughly 21% of the seafloor, seamounts are among the ocean's most vital – and least explored – ecosystems.
Our next Marine Biodiversity Networking Friday brings together researchers from three continents to share what we're learning about these hidden deep-sea worlds and how the world is working to protect them.

This session will feature three talks:
1. SEAMOUNTS Initiative Updates
Ocean Consultant Martin Visbeck & Anabel von Jackowski from University of Stockholm will introduce SEAMOUNTS, a new international science programme being built to drive and coordinate seamount research worldwide.

2. Life on a Megatransform: Exploring Deep-sea Biodiversity at Peyve Seamount
Aaron Micallef from MBARI & Paula Andrea Zapata Ramírez from KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) share fresh discoveries from the 2026 MATRICS expedition to the equatorial Atlantic, where ROV exploration revealed unexpectedly rich deep-sea communities.

3. Conservation of High-Seas Biodiversity: A science-Based Approach in the Emperor Seamounts
Se-Jong Ju from Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST) presents a five-year Korean-led initiative advancing science-based conservation in areas beyond national jurisdiction, in support of the BBNJ Agreement.

The session will be moderated by Ana Colaço (OKEANOS - Institute of Marine Sciences).
