This year's annual demersal fish monitoring survey, ARQDAÇO-62-P26, took place between 4 June and 22 July.
Conducted annually in the Azores since 1995 aboard the R/V Arquipélago, the survey aims to monitor the abundance of commercially important demersal and deep-sea fish species, while collecting information on the biology and ecology of the species caught.
During the survey, data were collected to estimate fishing effort, and selected species were tagged. Biological sampling was also carried out on several thousand fish, including measurements of length, weight, sex, maturity stage, otolith collection, and genetic sampling. In parallel, water samples were collected for environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses, and bycatch of coral and sponge species was recorded.
A total of 30 fishing stations were completed around the islands and at three offshore banks: Açores Bank, Princess Alice Bank, and Mar da Prata Bank.
The survey was conducted under the DEMERSAIS (2026) support contract, funded by the Regional Secretariat for the Sea and Fisheries.
This year also marked a historic milestone: for the first time in the history of these research cruises, the scientific team was composed entirely of women for several days.

PT A campanha de monitorização anual de peixes demersais deste ano, ARQDAÇO-62-P26, decorreu entre o dia 4 de Junho e 22 de Julho.

Esta campanha, que decorre na região desde 1995 a bordo do N/I ‘Arquipélago’, tem o objetivo de monitorizar a abundância dos peixes comerciais demersais e de profundidade, e recolher informação sobre a biologia e ecologia das espécies capturadas.

Durante a campanha recolheu-se informação para estimar o esforço de pesca e procedeu-se à marcação de algumas espécies e à amostragem biológica (comprimento, peso, sexo, estado de maturação, otólitos e genética) de alguns milhares de peixes de diversas espécies. Paralelamente, recolheram-se amostras de água para DNA ambiental e registou-se by-catch de algumas espécies de corais e esponjas.

Realizaram-se 30 lances de pesca à volta das ilhas e de 3 bancos de pesca (Açores, Princesa Alice e Mar da Prata).

A campanha é realizada no âmbito do contrato de apoio DEMERSAIS (2026) financiado pela Secretaria Regional do Mar e das Pescas. 

Este ano e pela primeira vez na história destes cruzeiros, a equipa científica foi constituída durante alguns dias exclusivamente por mulheres.
