ACUICONECTA: Fieldwork at Fajã de Santo Cristo Lagoon

The ACUICONECTA project is moving forward with its experimental work at Fajã de Santo Cristo Lagoon, on the island of São Jorge, with the installation of one of the structures that will be used to test the growth of Ruditapes decussatus (grooved carpet shell) in three different areas of the lagoon.

The experimental structures are equipped with data loggers to monitor several environmental parameters, including temperature, salinity, current direction and speed, and tidal variations. The data collected will help researchers understand how environmental conditions across the different areas of the lagoon influence the growth and survival of juvenile R. decussatus.

This experimental work is being carried out by Mirko De Girolamo, OKEANOS researcher, as part of the partnership between OKEANOS and APAS – the Fajã de Santo Cristo Clam Producers Association – within the ACUICONECTA project. APAS’s collaboration has been essential to implementing the experimental work in the lagoon, strengthening the connection between scientific research and the experience of local producers.
