Scientists discovered the first known coral garden built by the a rare lace coral!
Scientists have discovered the first known deep-sea coral garden formed by the rare lace coral
Crypthelia vascomarquesi in the Menez Gwen Marine Protected Area near the Azores.
Found at depths of 832–856 meters on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, this dense coral habitat is made up of a single highly endemic species and represents a vulnerable marine ecosystem. Researchers also provided the first complete description of the species, including female specimens, revealing unique reproductive features never before documented in the genus.
The discovery highlights the ecological importance of protected deep-sea habitats and supports stronger conservation measures in the region.
