O Instituto OKEANOS da Universidade dos Açores lamenta profundamente o falecimento de Fernando Menezes, advogado e político regional, figura maior na defesa da Autonomia dos Açores. 
Fernando Menezes foi um destacado dirigente do Partido Socialista dos Açores, deputado e Presidente da Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores, entre 2000 e 2008.

Fernando Menezes defendeu de forma acérrima a tripolaridade da Universidade dos Açores e a valorização do Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas; foi um dos apoiantes mais influentes da adaptação do antigo Hospital da Horta a sede do Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas, num processo que se estendeu durante mais de dez anos até à sua concretização em 2010.

ENG The OKEANOS Institute of the University of the Azores deeply mourns the passing of Fernando Menezes, lawyer, regional politician, and one of the leading figures in the defence of the Azores' Autonomy. 

Fernando Menezes was a prominent member of the Azores Socialist Party, serving as a Member of the Regional Parliament and as President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores from 2000 to 2008.

A steadfast advocate of the University of the Azores' tripolar structure and of strengthening the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, Fernando Menezes was one of the most influential supporters of the project to convert the former Horta Hospital into the Department's headquarters. This process spanned more than a decade before being successfully completed in 2010.

The OKEANOS Institute extends its deepest condolences to Fernando Menezes' family and friends.
