Ricardo Serrão Santos, Honorary Researcher at the OKEANOS- UAz, delivered two keynote lectures at the 61st Conference of the Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA 61), held in Brussels from 24 to 27 August.

Under the theme Bridging the gap between science and policy in estuarine and coastal marine biodiversity: the way forward, the conference brought together researchers, policymakers and professionals from across the world.

On 26 August, he spoke at the workshop Ocean science diplomacy for estuarine and coastal resilience, with the lecture “From marine science to ocean policy: practical lessons for Ocean Science Diplomacy”. His presentation explored how scientific knowledge can be more effectively translated into political and diplomatic action.

The following day, he opened ECSA's first Science meets Policy Day with the keynote “Listening to the Ocean: Science, Policy, and Global Marine Biodiversity Challenges”, addressing the global challenges facing marine biodiversity and the importance of strengthening the connection between science, policy and decision-making.

Through these two interventions, Ricardo Serrão Santos contributed to the international debate on ocean conservation, marine biodiversity and the role of science in shaping public policy.

No dia 26 de agosto, participou no workshop Ocean science diplomacy for estuarine and coastal resilience, com a apresentação “From marine science to ocean policy: practical lessons for Ocean Science Diplomacy”, dedicada à forma como o conhecimento científico pode contribuir mais eficazmente para os processos políticos e diplomáticos.

No dia seguinte, abriu o primeiro Science meets Policy Day da ECSA com a keynote “Listening to the Ocean: Science, Policy, and Global Marine Biodiversity Challenges”, abordando os desafios globais para a biodiversidade marinha e a importância de aproximar ciência, políticas públicas e processos de decisão.

Com estas duas intervenções, Ricardo Serrão Santos contribuiu para o debate internacional sobre biodiversidade marinha, conservação do oceano e a ligação entre ciência e política.
